How Should a Polo Shirt Fit? A Simple Guide for Men and Women

A polo is one of the easiest things to wear, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Too tight and it looks like a uniform. Too big and it looks borrowed. The good news: a few simple checks tell you if a polo fits, whether you want a classic, relaxed or boxy look.

This guide covers how a polo shirt should fit on men and women, how to choose your size from measurements, and how to wear each fit.

The quick fit checklist

  • Shoulders: for a classic fit, the shoulder seam sits at the edge of your shoulder. For a relaxed or "dropped shoulder" fit, it falls slightly below. That is intentional, not too big.
  • Chest: you should be able to pinch about 1–2 inches of fabric on each side for a classic fit, more for a relaxed one. If the buttons pull, size up.
  • Length: untucked, the hem should land around the middle of your zipper or hip. Much longer and it looks oversized; much shorter and it rides up when you lift your arms.
  • Sleeves: they should end around mid-bicep, with a little room. Tight sleeves look dated; very loose ones make the shirt look like a tee.
  • Collar: it should lie flat and keep its shape. A ribbed or structured collar helps.

Classic, relaxed or boxy: which fit is right for you?

Classic / regular fit

Follows the body without clinging. The safest choice for the office and for anyone who likes a tidy look.

Relaxed fit

More room through the chest and body, often with dropped shoulders or raglan sleeves. Easier to move in and more modern. Our Color Block Polo Shirt (100% cotton) and Contrast Collar Raglan Polo Shirt are relaxed fits. If you want a closer fit, size down.

Boxy fit

Wide and slightly shorter, sitting away from the body. It works best untucked with straight or wide trousers. See the Boxy Plaid Polo Shirt.

How to choose your size from measurements

Size labels vary between brands. Measurements don't. Here is the most reliable method:

  1. Take a polo or tee you like the fit of and lay it flat.
  2. Measure straight across the chest, one inch below the armholes. This is the "chest (flat)" measurement.
  3. Measure the length from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem.
  4. Compare both numbers with the size guide on the product page and pick the closest match.

For reference, the chest (flat) of our relaxed Color Block Polo is 21.1 in for S, 21.9 in for M and 22.6 in for L. The Boxy Plaid Polo is wider by design: 23.2 in for S. Two shirts with the same size label can fit very differently, which is why measuring beats guessing.

How should a polo fit on women?

Polos are having a moment for women, worn loose over denim, tucked into skirts or layered under a jacket. Many of the best options are unisex. A few tips:

  • For a relaxed look, wear your usual size in a unisex polo. It will sit slightly oversized, which is the point.
  • For a neater look, size down one and tuck it into high-waisted trousers or a skirt.
  • Check the shoulder seam: if it falls far down your arm, the shirt will look too big even when tucked.

The Contrast Piping Polo Shirt and the Contrast Collar Raglan Polo both have a little stretch, which helps the fit when tucked.

Fabric changes the fit

  • 100% cotton: breathable with a natural feel. It has little stretch, so choose your size carefully.
  • Cotton with stretch: a small amount of spandex helps the polo keep its shape and move with you.
  • Lightweight blends: cooler on hot days, with a softer drape that suits boxy shapes.

Whatever the fabric, wash cold and tumble dry low to keep the fit as it was on day one.

How to wear each fit

  • Work: classic or relaxed polo, tailored trousers, loafers.
  • Weekend: relaxed or boxy polo, shorts or light denim, sneakers.
  • Evening: a dark polo under an unstructured jacket.
  • For women: an oversized polo over straight jeans, or a tucked polo with a midi skirt.

Frequently asked questions

Should a polo shirt be tight or loose?

Neither. It should skim the body with a little room at the chest and sleeves. Relaxed and boxy fits are looser on purpose, but the shoulders and length should still look intentional.

Should you tuck in a polo shirt?

Tuck it in with tailored trousers or for a smarter look. Leave it out with shorts, jeans or when the polo has a straight hem designed to be worn untucked.

Should I size up or down in a polo?

Size down if you want a closer fit in a relaxed style. Size up only if the chest pulls or the buttons gap. When in doubt, compare flat measurements.

How long should a polo shirt be?

Untucked, it should end around the middle of your zipper. Long enough to stay put when you raise your arms, short enough not to cover your pockets.
